Carolin Weinert

where’s the puss

Carolin Weinert's series of etchings depicts five execution scenes, using motifs drawn from historical and contemporary photographs. They tell cruel stories – of men being 'legally' killed, surrounded by people who serve up their own idea of 'justice' – but if the viewer can bring themslves to examine these etchings more closely, a tiny cat can be spotted in each of them, just like in the pictures we used, as children, to stare at in search of a hidden animal. Weinert's delicately crafted black-and-white etchings raise questions about the roles of victim and perpetrator – for the people in the pictures, but also among those who view the artwork.
