Smile is a short stop-motion film set in the circus ring. It is a dysfunctional love story between two misfits, an acrobat dancer and a clown, fixed in their character roles and unable to translate their performed romance into reality. The story looks at them as performers, but also as real people with ordinary emotions. As the narrative unfolds, the characters gradually begin to see behind the façade of their performance personae. The unique look of the film was achieved by compositing traditional puppet stop-motion with hand-painted backgrounds. This distinctive handmade style creates a dark, intriguing and magical atmosphere.
