‘Scenery I’ is a paper installation consisting of four layers of 220g paper (sized 210 by 175 cm) that hang down from the ceiling with a 100 cm distance between each one. In this Installation the image of a so-called ‘nature’, inspired by the 19th century Public Zoo of Antwerp, is cut out. Nature and architecture are intertwined. The spectator can walk around the installation. When he stands in front of it, he can see ‘the perfect three-dimensional image.’ When he moves this image falls apart, revealing the construction of the installation. The use of theatrical light underlines the unnaturalness of the setting, putting the spectator in scene, leaving him to wonder about how we observe nature.
