Face Off deals with how a black South African woman experiences white Europe: from envy to ridicule, from self-pity to shame. In the performance this struggle is shown through irony and humor. The work challenges the notion that there are no ‘black and white issues’ or residues of the colonial past in 2013. The intention is not to position the artist as a victim or to place blame, but rather to draw attention to the complexity of these issues. This is political theatre that embraces everybody; it’s stand-up comedy with heart. Performer Ntando Cele developed the musical score and songs of Face Off with Swiss musician and composer Simon Ho. A rich combination of music, text, and video images serve as the narrative, which is realised through the live performances of both Cele and Ho.
