Topography of Light
Topography of Light is a series of analogue prints integrating Tina Lechner’s latest research findings on portrait photography. Instead of using the camera as an instrument to explore an individual face or depict personality Lechner creates a void at the centre of the picture. This effect is achieved by the simplest of means; using costumes that call to mind sculptural surfaces the portrayed person is radically reduced to a geometrical configuration defined only by light and shadow, edges and planes. The objective of this alienation is to sound out the interface between representation and abstraction. The images are all composed so as to maintain equilibrium between a technically perfect effigy and a non-representational topography.
