Voice Works

Voice Works #1-3 are three videos based on recordings of artist Trine Hylander Friis' voice. These nonverbal and haunting voices are connected to images of the primal elements: fire, wood and water. The first Voice Work is more narrative in character, while the others reach a more abstract, mystic level by making use of mirrored patterns and almost hypnotising repetitions. 'In many languages there is an etymological link between spirit and breath (breath being the "voiceless voice", the zero point of vocal emission); the voice carried by breath points to the soul irreducible to the body. One could use a French pun, and say that the voice is plus-de-corps: both the surplus of the body, a bodily excess, and the no-more body, the end of the corporeal, so that it embodies the very coincidence of the quintessential corporeality and the soul. The voice is the flesh of the soul, its ineradicable materiality.' - Mladen Dolar (2006)
